TECHNOLOGIE
A. — Appareil ou partie de l'appareil utilisé dans le forage par rotation. Les Américains n'emploient que deux appareils: le Pennsylvanien, dans lequel le trépan est suspendu à une corde actionnée par un levier de battage et le Rotary (Le Génie civil, 14 mars 1931, p. 276b ds HÖFLER Anglic. 1982). La colonne de tiges est terminée à sa partie supérieure par une barre de section carrée ou polygonale pouvant glisser au travers d'une ouverture de forme identique, percée dans la table de rotation dénommée rotary (CHARTROU, Pétroles natur. et artif., 1931, p. 50).
— En appos. Lorsque les prospecteurs s'attaquèrent à des terrains plus difficiles, ils durent s'y adapter en créant le procédé de forage rotary (...). La méthode consiste à utiliser des trépans à molettes dentées ou des trépans diamantés, sur lesquels on appuie et que l'on fait tourner (Encyclop. univ. t. 7 1970, p. 149).
B. — Système Rotary. Système d'établissement automatique des communications téléphoniques par des organes tournants. L'administration française employa surtout le système Rotary, avec lequel fut automatisé le réseau de Paris (premier central ouvert en 1928) (...). Les systèmes à organes tournants, Rotary et R 6, ne sont plus commandés (...) depuis 1960 pour constituer des centraux neufs (Encyclop. univ., t. 15, 1973, p. 849).
